Ingredients
  • 2 rounds of pita bread
  • 2 cups of mixed lettuce leaves
  • 1 cup of radishes, thinly sliced
  • 1 cucumber, diced
  • 2 tomatoes, diced
  • 1 red onion, finely sliced
  • 1 cup of fresh mint leaves

  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • 2 teaspoons of sumac
  • Salt and pepper to taste
Directions
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Tear the pita bread into bite-sized pieces and toss with a tablespoon of the olive oil. Bake until crispy and golden brown, about 10 minutes. Set aside to cool.

  2. In a large salad bowl, combine the lettuce, radishes, cucumber, tomatoes, onion, mint, and parsley.

  3. In a separate bowl, mix the remaining olive oil, lemon juice, sumac, salt, and pepper to make your dressing.

  4. Drizzle the dressing over the salad and toss until everything is well-coated.

  5. Just before serving, add the crispy pita chips and give the salad one final toss.

Fattoush is a traditional Lebanese salad known for its refreshing blend of vegetables and herbs, all brought together with a tangy dressing and the signature crunch of pita chips. The salad is a celebration of fresh produce, and it's often served as part of a mezze, a selection of small dishes usually enjoyed at the start of a meal.

The inspiration for our Feature Scaling Fattoush comes from the concept of 'feature scaling' in machine learning, where values are adjusted to ensure equal weight. Our unique twist? We're using this concept to balance the flavours in our salad.

In traditional Fattoush, the dressing is a simple mix of lemon, olive oil, and sumac. But for our Iron Chef-inspired version, we've adjusted the ratio of these ingredients to give the salad a more pronounced tangy and zesty flavour. This 'scaling' of flavours ensures that no single component overpowers the others, creating a harmonious experience in every bite.

The addition of mint and parsley further elevates the freshness of the salad, while the radishes provide a peppery kick. The crispy pita chips, a key feature of any Fattoush, add a delightful crunch to the mix.

This Feature Scaling Fattoush is a celebration of balance and harmony, just as in great machine learning models. It's a salad that's as pleasing to the palate as it is to the eye. So, why not give it a try and experience the magic of feature scaling in your very own kitchen?
